The Urbandale Booster Club Frerichs’ Scholarship is presented in honor of Denny Frerichs, Football coach at Urbandale High School from 1967 to 1994. The Urbandale Booster Club annually awards one senior male and one senior female with a one time, $500.00 scholarship. Students are evaluated by a panel of individuals on their academic profile, involvement in high school athletics, involvement in community activities, and the recommendations of others.
Mykaela “Mickey’ Cole
The daughter of Matt and Karley Cole, Mykaela “Mickey’ Cole is the 2016 Female Recipient of the Urbandale Booster Club, Frerichs’ Scholarship Award. Mickey is a three year letterwinner in Cross Country, Track, and Softball, and lettered in Basketball one year. She earned Elite All-State in Cross Country this past season as well as Academic All-State. In 2015, she was named Elite All-State in Track and was named Honorable Mention All-Division in Softball. Mickey is also a member of the National Honor Society, Speech Team, Leo Club, and ECO Club; she has been active in Emerging Leaders, DARE Role Models, Best Buddies, and the Silver Cord Program. Mickey plans to attend Drake University next fall to major in Biology and run Track and Cross Country.
Michael Westphal
Michael Westphal is the 2016 Male Recipient of the Urbandale Booster Club, Frerichs’ Scholarship Award. Michael is a four year letterwinner in Cross Country and a three year letterwinner in Track. He earned Academic All-State this fall in Cross Country and was All Conference the past two seasons, running in the State Meet both years. He has been an Academic All- Conference selection three times in both Cross Country and Track. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Senate, Leo Club, Eco Club, Emerging Leaders, DECA, and the Urbandale High School Student Senate. Michael is the son of Jeff and Jenny Westphal. Michael plans to attend the University of Iowa in the fall to major in Human Physiology.
