On Tuesday evening, the Urbandale Booster Club Frerichs' Scholarship was awarded to seniors Mallary Erbes and Erik Miller.
The Urbandale Booster Club Frerichs’ Scholarship is presented in honor of Denny Frerichs, Football coach at Urbandale High School from 1967 to 1994. The Urbandale Booster Club annually awards one senior male and one senior female with a one time, $500.00 scholarship. Students are evaluated by a panel of individuals on their academic profile, involvement in high school athletics, involvement in community activities, and the recommendations of others.
Mallary Erbes
The daughter of Jim and Debbie Erbes, Mallary Erbes is the 2015 Female Recipient of the Urbandale Booster Club, Frerichs’ Scholarship Award. Mallary has earned a varsity letter in four different sports while in high school, amassing thirteen total letters to date. She earned Honorable Mention All-State in Volleyball this past season, along with All-District and first team all CIC and first team All-CIC Western Division, and helped lead the J-Hawks to State on two different occasions. In Soccer last spring, she earned 2nd Team All State, 2nd Team All-CIC and 2nd Team All-CIC Western Division. Mallary earned Honorable Mention All-Division last season on the Basketball Court. In Track, Mallary earned Elite All-State this past season and was a member of the 2014 State Championship Track Team and the 2014 State and 2014 Drake Relays Champion Shuttle Hurdle Relay Teams. Mallary is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, Emerging Leaders, FCA, and served as a DARE Role Model. Mallary is a member of the Honor Roll and earned Academic All-Conference in four sports. Mallary is undecided as to her destination, but following high school she plans to major in Communication Disorders and participate in a sport at the intercollegiate level.
Erik Miller
Erik Miller is the 2015 Male Recipient of the Urbandale Booster Club, Frerichs’ Scholarship Award. Erik has been active in three sports throughout high school. In Cross Country, Erik earned four varsity letters, served as a team captain, and competed in the State Meet this past season. In Soccer, Erik earned 2nd Team All-CIC Western Division last spring and has earned three letters; he is a team captain. Erik will earn his second letter in Basketball this winter. He is also involved in DECA and the Emerging Leaders Program. Erik is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, National Council on Youth Leadership, and the Honor Roll. He earned Academic All-State in Cross Country and Academic All-Conference in three sports multiple times; he is an Academic Letter recipient. Erik is the son of Bruce and Kimm Miller. Erik plans to attend Iowa State University after high school to study Engineering after high school.
